Assistant Chief Kenneth Lay is a graduate of Alcorn State University with a Bachelor of Science in Educational Psychology. He also earned an associate degree of Fire Science from Lansing Community College and a master’s degree of Business from Belhaven University.
Chief Lay has proudly served 33 years in the fire service, his professional career has taken him to six different cities and organizations. He started his fire service career in Muskegon Heights, where he worked his way through the ranks to the top position as Fire Chief. He was able to share his talent and hold the position as the first African American Fire Chief in 3 other cities: Jackson, TN, Gastonia, NC, and Fishers, IN. He also worked as Deputy Fire Chief in two other larger cities: Newport New, VA and South Fulton, GA.
Chief Lay has had the pleasure of serving on many local and state committees as well as being on IAFC Human Relation Committee.
