Jay Cwiak is Division Chief for the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District located near Reno, Nevada. With over 37 years of experience in Fire and EMS he holds an associate’s degree in Fire Science, a bachelor’s degree in business management and administration, and several certifications including NFPA Fire Officer III, NWCG Task Force Leader, and 30 years as a nationally registered paramedic. Over the past three decades he has served slower paced rural communities supported by volunteers, faster paced metropolitan communities relying on the nation’s busiest of stations, as well as fire based and private ambulance transport in two different states and three different counties. He participated in several specialty team activities such as technical rescue, hazardous materials response, and first responder drone technology. He has acted as the TMFPD’s liaison on four separate construction projects, installation of a fire station alerting system, and for 10 years participated as one of the lead members of the apparatus design committee. As the Logistics Chief he is faced with issues regarding facility maintenance, future planning, and the true cost of doing business.
