Public safety personnel spend endless hours preparing and training for planned and emergency events such as inclement weather, public unrest, protests, terrorist acts and special events. Each year, the volume of EOC activations increases. This presentation will explore EOC activation triggers and the design considerations that support facilities' readiness during EOC activations of various scales and complexities. While these facilities must be hardened as essential facilities, there need not be a loss of aesthetics or indoor environmental quality. After experiencing a very active hurricane season in 2024, many of these activations may be fresh in attendees’ minds. This presentation will address the most recent complications and challenges created by these storms and how we have learned from them.
